In the Hopi tribe (American Southwest), Kachinas are spirits who are said to live on the mountain peaks of San Francisco. They are not considered spirits of God, but friends who come to the villages to sing, dance, give gifts to children and most importantly bring beneficial rain for crops. During religious ceremonies, Kachina dancers are the masked representatives of the spirits and the manner in which they are dressed depends on the spirit that they represent. The Kachina dolls representing these dancers were traditionally offered to the children of the Hopi tribe. Today, many are made for tourists and collectors!
