While exploring a catalog of 19th-century military uniforms from the Emile Hermès collection, Virginie Jamin was captivated by the striking power of the designs. The scarf draws its name from two iconic military units: the zouaves, North African light infantry in the French Army, and the dragoons, cavalry soldiers adept at fighting both on foot and horseback. Richly adorned with passementerie, braids, insignia, and intricate silk embroidery, the uniforms seemed to spring to life. “It felt as though I could hear them speaking,” Jamin reflects. “I sensed a unique connection, like the harmony between dancers in a troupe.” Inspired by this vision, she crafted a dynamic composition that evokes a swirling dance of jackets, adorned with stars, dots, and the detailed trimmings of a two-tone bandana.
