Transformation, distortion, metamorphosis. The iconic horse and groom – symbol of the house of Hermès – stretch and show their elastic strength. The image is distorted, extended, elongated. The long-necked horse, with his dainty, slender legs, pulls a curious carriage. Clearly, we can’t make him trot forward, but no matter: he stands proud and still. And what of the elegant groom facing him? Is that portly shadow really his? Tricked by the traps of trompe l’oeil and optical illusion, the eye rocks and rolls, caught up in the play of appearance and reality. One thing is certain, even when subjected to the extremes of graphic fantasy, the icon remains intact, and recognisable at a glance.
