Hermes silk jersey scarf, hand-rolled, 36" x 36"

The “KELLY EN PERLES” carré is an adaptation of an original work by a Cameroon artist which had been commissioned for the Africa year in 1997 and used to illustrate a Monde d’Hermès cover. The print is a fine rendering of the beads embroidered in relief on a roughly-textured rustic canvas. Such work in tiny multicoloured glass beads is a traditional African folk art used for jewellery, garments and other finery. The central motif on this carré is a little character in a naïf handling of the Kelly bag. Amusingly expressionist, two diamonds on either side of the handle are like the eyes, the handle itself is the mouth and the strap looks like a smile. The geometrical figures round the border – circles, diamonds, parallel lines and drawings, and even the H in each corner – are based on traditional African motifs much used for pottery and textiles.
