This scarf depicts various types of harness buckles, notably those with hooks or studs, such as used for tandem carriage-driving. The artist composed the design following a request by Robert Dumas, taking inspiration from the harness buckles preserved within the Emile Hermès Collection, living proof of the founder’s early craftsmanship at the Maison Thierry Hermès, Parisian harness-maker and saddler in the 19th Century.
