Annie Faivre invites us to take a stroll through paradise. Evoking the Garden of Eden, her vibrant, richly detailed composition is inspired by so-called verdure tapestries, fashionable in the late Middle Ages. Pleasure gardens – the natural world arranged and presented for the aesthetic delight of humankind – are thought to have originated in ancient Mesopotamia. Here, a luxuriant series of legendary gardens is an invitation to stroll and enjoy. The hanging gardens of Babylon were one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. A medieval labyrinth celebrates the patient art of topiary – cutting plants into elaborate shapes. Here, too, are the gardens of the Alhambra in Granada – a marvel of Islamic art –, the Mughul gardens of the Taj Mahal, the gardens of the Villa Borghese in Rome, cooled by myriad fountains; and the gardens of Majorelle in Marrakech. A painter and plant collector, Majorelle created a magical place of light and shade, featuring species discovered and collected on his travels to the four corners of the globe.
